Another city, same tour
I miss the days of sleep ins, breakfast in bed and general relaxation in the mornings. I was woken up at 6:45am this morning in preparation for an 8:45am start of our city tour from the Marriot Hotel in the city. Of course, it was a freezing morning, especially at that time of the day, so we rugged up in preparation for cold weather before jumping in our taxi and heading into the city. I’m soooo glad I had my ski jacket today. Although we were in the tour bus for 3 hours (3 HOURS!!!!) and that was moderately warm, outside the bus was cold and windy.
When our tour finished around midday we hopped out at the French Markets and explored up and down the aisles for approximately an hour, much to Dad’s dismay. We even collected some cute little trinkets.
Dad was getting bored and we were all pretty hungry by this stage so we went to the place called Cafe la Mode ( I think ) which serves the famous cuisine of the area: beighnets, which are a cross between an America donut and a French puff pastry covered in icing sugar – amazing!
Upon finishing our sugary treat, we started the 4 hour walking tour of the French Quarter. The buildings (just like most other cities) were old, some in disrepair, some fancy and expensive and others were just regular houses. All through the city however are decorations for Mardi Gras festival, which in New Orleans isn’t associated with Gay Pride like it is in Australia and the ‘festival’ goes for around a month, although the actual parades don’t start straight away. It would be great to be in the area when all the parades begin, but such is the pattern of our holiday, we seem to leave before anything exciting happens in a particular city.
After our feet were totally dead from walking in circles all day, Mum and I sat near the bus pick up area while Dad kept exploring the area, leaving us vulnerable to the ramblings of a crazy homeless man. I can’t post some of the things he said to us because it wouldn’t be appropriate, but let’s just say that I was very glad when he left.
The bus finally arrived and we piled in with a few others who were going back to the RV Park. We got half way back and we had to turn back to pick up some people who were late and missed the bus – soo cut! Took us twice as long to get home – thanks guys! We eventually got back to the RV, made some dinner, repacked my suitcase and checked out my photos.
Longview is our final destination for tomorrow’s travels, with a tour around a plantation estate to start off the morning. It’s going to be a long day.

Just around the river bend
Everybody, hold onto your hats…. Guess what we bought today? That’s right, you guessed right… VEGEMITE!! It was the highlight of my day!
We found it at a shop called World Market (which is a mad shop in itself) that sold it and we high tailed it over there to collect our prize. DELICIOUS!
Anyway, apart from that exciting bit of our day, we went to church this morning, since its Sunday, at Victory Church, New Orleans. It definitely had the ‘Hillsong’ feel to it, very Pentecostal. After church we headed to the shops to get some groceries, etc… You’d think that you’d walk in, grab what you needed, and walk out. It was not like this. In the end, it took us approximately 2 HOURS to get everything organised, bought and loaded into the RV! My goodness it was tiring! Who would’ve thought that buying groceries would be so labour intensive?
FINALLY got back to the RV Park, made some lunch and then crashed into bed for a nana nap. After an hour or so, I was woken up to get ready because we had to take a shuttle bus into the city for a River paddle boat cruise. The Jazz music dinner cruise along the Mississippi River was delicious and relaxing- didn’t feel nauseas at all. However, I was already dead tired so it seemed to drag on and on.
Grabbed a taxi, came back to the RV and now I am heading to my nice, warm comfy bed.

Crossing the lines
You’d think that when we were in the RV I could just sleep in as they drove to wherever we were going…. this is not the case.
They forced me not only to get out of my (finally) warm bed, but into the freezing temperatures outside in shorts and flip flops! After I showered and once again braved the cold to get back to the RV (since I can’t shower in the RV because we’re ‘conserving water’!!), Mum tried to mollify me with pancakes…. mmmm…
We had quite a bit of driving to do today, so we set out early. We went from Florida across the border into Alabama, Mississippi and have ended up in New Orleans, Louisiana. We stopped at a rest stop in Mississippi that had an impressive ‘rest stop building’ that didn’t look like a rest stop anywhere in QLD. They had a few memorial type areas for the Hurricane Katrina that devastated the area. There were several wooden carved artworks of driftwood that were simply amazing. We’re staying in New Orleans for a few days and I think we’re all looking forward to days without long hours of driving.
Exciting note: Gonna buy some vegemite tomorrow!! That’s right, you heard me: VEGEMITE!! AUSSIE AUSSIE AUSSIE!!
Just for something different
Another day of driving (just for something different) and we ended up in an area called Chattahoochee which is about an hour out of Tallahassee. The RV Park that we’re staying in features many wild animals such as racoons, armadillos, deer, cats, squirrels and coyotes. They also gave us heads up that it might get down to 0 degrees Celsius tonight – unlucky since we’ve got all our winter gear packed away in the storage area of the RV.
We stopped off for fuel, bathroom breaks and lunch, but apart from that, it was a pretty basic day. Mum had her first stretch of driving today, and we’re still alive so I count that as a win. I slept and read my book for most of the day. It’s good to be able to move around and stretch your legs, unlike when you’re travelling in a car. We are heading to New Orleans tomorrow for a few days so that should be an interesting place to explore.

Day 49: Miami – cruise
We got onboard after waiting in line and going through security where we saw lots of old people, and I was very worried there were no young people except me on the cruise! We had to wait for our rooms to be cleaned and finished so we ate some lunch on the main pool deck and listened to the provided entertainment. After they were finished with our rooms, we set up our stuff and continued to explore the ship, make new friends with young people and generally have a good time. I had to get a PC card (parental consent) so I could legally drink since I was 18-20 and I wasn’t 21 till the next day. It was a huge issue for them, but I finally got it, only to find out that I could only have beer and wine, not spirits! Cut as! Tonight I went to the ‘nightclub’ with my Argentinean friends – made some more friends, who were also Argentinean, 2 American chicks and a group of Boston ‘youngens’ and ended up back at the room at 3.30am. The club was pretty sad in comparison to any other club in the world, but it was better than nothing I suppose.
Day 50: 1st sea day
Happy birthday to me!!!! Someone had a cake and champagne delivered to our room for my birthday. It was a lovely surprise, but we still have no idea who ordered it for me. Our first day at sea was a simple day which included breakfast in bed, sunbaking, meeting up with my Argentinean friends, partying in the ‘nightclub’ which was playing 70s and 80s music till 11.30pm and some dance music after that. During the day we watched the ‘Mr sexy legs’ competition and one of the Boston guys won – Shawn I think. The Boston group are insane dancers which is very entertaining to watch.
If I ever go on a cruise again I should definitely do that next time – travel in a group of YOUNG people.
Got to bed at 1.30am – sad I know for my 21st birthday, but I was kinda over it all.
Day 51: Samana
Since I was officially 21 I went to reception to get an ‘adult’ card (that states I am 21 and can legally drink) and she tried to tell me I couldn’t have one! As you can imagine I was pretty annoyed and I made her double check and she ‘made the exception! Pssh- they were always supposed to change it over.
Our first day tour today was on the island of Samana, Barbados. It began as a lovely sunny day and we took a boat from our cruise ship to the island. Before long however it started raining. We took a comfy bus with aircon to the countryside – which reminded me a lot of Bali. We did a horseback tour around a little village called ‘la cafe’ to a waterfall. It was scary being on a horse in the mud with so many steep hills and rocky areas in the rain. I had a guide who helped me stay on the horse though and he was very helpful with river crossings as well. Mum’s guide actually carried me across the first big water crossing we did! I was pretty worried he was going to fall over and we’d both end up in the water! Maybe next time I’ll ride a horse in a more stable area without the rain.
After we’d finished our excursion we came back onto the cruise ship, got changed out of our wet clothes and headed for dinner at the Venetian Restaurant – which was too full so we went to the Aqua Bar instead. Steak, of course, was delicious! Been chilling in the room, swaying to the rhythm of the boat, watching the most recent HP – good times.
Day 52: Tortola
We opted for the Best of Tortola tour today. It rained, had windy roads and it was overcast all day. We stopped at the Marine University for a leg stretch and bathroom break –riveting area. We went to a beach for an hour and a half and I sat/slept in the car for most of it because of the rain… who wants to go to the beach when it’s raining!
I had pizza for dinner in the cabin but M&D went out for dinner. It was good to just chill, eat pizza and watch movies. Didn’t feel well tonight and wasn’t too fussed on going dancing with my friends – they tend to speak only Spanish most of the time and they don’t get too enthused about dancing to lots of American music- gay!
Day 53: St Maarten
DIAMONDS! Today we were docked on the Dutch side of St Maarten Island. As we docked next to the Freedom of the Sea cruise ship we felt tiny and insignificant since it was so insanely massive! We did a tour on the Tiki Snorkel Hut today – it was mad! It was a floating jetty, bar, and a collection of boats that fenced in the snorkel area. There was a sunken helicopter, a canon and a submarine in the area. I made a random friend with a guy that worked at the snorkel hut and I can’t remember his name, but he showed me around the area so that was pretty cool. I ended up pretty burnt from today but that’s ok because it’s all adding to my lovely tan!! (stop laughing Damo!)
Did some experimenting with my GoPro underwater at the tiki hut… didn’t turn out how I wanted it to
, but good for experience and figuring out how much is actually in the frame when I’m shooting. Will definitely have to read my instruction manual and do some messing around with the settings.
There were heaps of other boats floating around the area, using it as well, but they were sunbaking on their own boats instead of our little ‘pier/jetty’. Sunbaking, swimming and cute fish – it was a great day.
After we were sufficiently crispy we headed back to town to do some shopping! Boy did we do some shopping! We bought clothes, shoes, souvenirs and of course, diamonds!
I bought a 0.35 162 facet ‘O’ diamond for Mum’s ring (which will be my inheritance when she croaks) because she didn’t have her VISA card and Dad was back on the ship. M&D also bought a ring for Dad as his anniversary present from Mum. As you avid blog readers should know, we also had the use of some slow internet while they put the diamond into the ring, so that was a nice change.
I went back out clubbing tonight since I hadn’t been out for two nights. It was aight, still not a very ‘pumping’ club… very sad… My Argentinean friends were out but not many other people were so it was pretty empty – well emptier than usual. The Boston crew was suspiciously absent. I chilled with my friends for a bit after leaving the club, grabbed some food and headed to bed around 3am.
Day 54: Antigua
All of these islands remind me of Bali and Vanuatu – blue water, lovely beaches with a side of ‘developing country’.
We had a lazy day on the beach today with a Caribbean lunch and drinks- delicious! We also rented 2 ‘jet bikes’ (jet skis for regular aussies!) and raced around the bay for 30minutes. It was great fun despite the dangerous run in we had when I was driving with Dad’s leg and jet ski (he’s fine, don’t worry!). Definitely need to buy one… wish I’d bought my GoPro with me and put it on the front of the jet ski! Saying that, I’m not sure I’d trust the suction cap that attaches to it yet, wouldn’t want to lose my GoPro! M&D had an hour full body massage while I sat under my umbrella and read my book, trying not to get too burnt after yesterday. Awesome day: definitely one of the best on the cruise.
Got even more sunburnt today, despite my umbrella over my lounge chair. Thinking about going dancing later, don’t know how long I’ll stay.
Day 55: Bridgetown, Barbados
Barbados was amazing! We did a catamaran and swimming with the turtles tour. We ran into some guys on the boat that we’d met in the hot tub a few nights earlier, Troy and Jarrett. Hilarious guys – after today we spent more and more time with them – I wish we could’ve visited them after the cruise, but I don’t think we have time.
The guys working on the boat kept throwing bread right in front of me so the fish (at one stop for snorkelling) would go on a feeding frenzy in front of my face… he says it was so I could get a better picture – I think he did it to make me freak out and scream. We went to 2 snorkelling places and a beach to relax and swim at. The shore excursion man Paul was nice and friendly –we had a good chat about working on cruises, in bars, etc.
We all swam with the turtles off the boat; they were sooo cute! But I was very worried they were going to bite me at several stages… there were a lot of people near them and I wouldn’t have been surprised if they did bite someone just to escape the many people surrounding them. At one point I was floating on the water taking video of a turtle when it decided to start surfacing – I freaked out and tried to get out of the way as fast as I could (with no flippers) just in case it bit me to make me move out of its way. Martes and Nawaul (Argentinean friends) were bitten by the turtles because they were too close for their liking. It would seem that my fear was well grounded.
The 7pm show in the Stardust Theatre was the hypnotist Tim (can’t remember his last name)– boring! Dinner at aqua – steak! Delicious but wish I had a jacket because it was ridiculously air-conditioned! I got all dressed up to go dancing tonight and had a lay down around 9pm before I went out… the only problem with that plan was that I fell asleep in my clothes and didn’t wake up till 3am. Guess I needed sleep more than dancing in the ‘club’ tonight. Saw one of my Argentinean friends at lunch the next day and he tells me that last night was great fun with all these crazy adventures happening. Of course when I’m not there they actually party!
Day 56: St Kitts
Today was the last time we set foot on dry land until we return to Miami.
We were supposed to go on the Rail and Sail tour at St Kitts today but it turned out that the train derailed earlier in the day and so our tour was cancelled – cut! We had a look around the port shops and then grabbed a taxi to take us on a mini tour of the island. It was a good relaxing day despite our original tour being cancelled. We drove around the island, stopping off at sweet photo spots.
We got back to the port shopping area around 5.30pm, checked out the numerous jewellery and tourist souvenir shops. Dinner was amazing at Moderno! They constantly bring over different types of meat until you tell them to stop! Shouldn’t have had any salad and saved room for more meat! It was delicious! We should have gone there every night!
Might check out my photos before heading out dancing tonight – hopefully I don’t sleep through it again!
Day 57: Sea day
I had a great sleep in with breakfast in bed served by our personal maid – Dad. M&D left the room before lunch to stretch their legs and do some shopping while I lay around, watched some TV and just generally ‘limed’ (hung out), as they say in the Caribbean. Left the room around lunch time, found the parents, grabbed some lunch at the Garden Cafe and then it was time to sunbake on the deck.
Swam, baked, ate ice cream, drank cocktails and generally had a relaxed day in the sun with my Argentinean friends and partially with my parents. Felt like I was burning a little so I called it quits around 4pm and headed back to the room. Had a look in the mirror and realised that I should’ve called it quits much earlier. My neck, chest and collarbone were deep red and blistering.
It literally felt like my skin was bubble wrap! Of course, this was the night of M&D’s 30th anniversary and we were going out to this nice French restaurant, so I had to wear something nice instead of a singlet, shorts and flip flops. The only issue with this was that with such burnt and itchy skin, I couldn’t wear much. I sat through dinner in a silk shirt (in an attempt not to irritate my inflamed skin), trying to stop itching, which turned out to be impossible.
While M&D went and had some professional pictures done by an onboard ‘professional’ photographer (which he lost on a corrupt memory card –LMAO), I went back to our room, got a bag of ice, sat with it on my torso and watched a movie. It definitely took most of the sting out of the burn, so that was good.
The Spinnaker Lounge (SL) hosted a ‘white party’ tonight and it was pretty packed (a definite change from the rest of the week). It was the first night that I did shots at the SL because I actually had people who were old enough to be served spirits. Two of the Argentineans, Matias and Agustin, and I sampled all of the available shots at the SL in between dancing the night away. Since it was also Matias’ 27th birthday and they realised that I turned 21 on the 2nd day of the cruise, we had several of the shots numerous times – awesome night!
It was definitely on of the better nights of ‘clubbing’, despite it being a pale comparison to a proper nightclub.
Since the club closes around 2.30am, we all walked around the ship, listened to some music on the pool deck and generally just ‘limed’. Time flies when you’re having fun and I didn’t get to bed till 5.30am ish.
Day 58: Sea day
After another average sleep in and breakfast in bed, we headed out to lunch with our friends Troy and Jarrett at the Bambini Burger place. It was delicious.
During most sea days, the cruise would put on different entertainment all over the ship. On the pool deck it was generally DJ music, live bands, different competitions, etc. Today was a synchronised swimming competition – North America (Boston) vs. South America (Argentina)! Both teams were hilariously out of time, and the crowd loved them both so much that it was a draw in the end and they had to share the prize (a bucket of beer).
We hung around the pool, listening to music, chatting and eating ice cream until the next competition began. I didn’t sunbake like yesterday since I was already deep red and blistered, but I did try to get some sun on my legs – at least they weren’t crispy from the day before. The next competition was the Miss Norwegian Dawn Biceps Competition. I was tempted to enter (since I’m sooo built) but I decided it wouldn’t be fair competition for the other women so I didn’t. It was basically a dance competition between ladies in bikinis (as was the pattern of most of the competitions on the pool deck). Funnily enough though, this older woman (probably around 55) smashed the younger girls because she actually had some exercise moves instead of just dancing. The judges got an up close and personal view of her bottom as she bent to do her exercises. It was hilarious to watch the judges faces, since most of them were younger guys.
After the competition we headed to the basketball courts to have a mess around game. Now as most of you know, I’m not a sporty person anymore, and as it turns out, this is for a good reason. In the space of a few hours on the basketball courts playing soccer, basketball and ‘knock out’, I managed to snap 2 of my toe nails off, be stomped on, get a busted lip from someone smashing a basketball into my face (and of course, against my braces) and to finished it off, I managed an unco somersault into the fence as I slipped out of my flip flops. I’d like to think that I managed a graceful exit from my impromptu somersault.
However, despite so many injuries, it was a great afternoon. When we played a 3 on 3 basketball game Agustin, Dan (Boston guy) and I smashed the other 2 teams and I even managed to score a few goals. At one point we were even joined by some little French kids (who spoke no English or Spanish) who wanted to play soccer with us. They picked the biggest guys on their team and we began a hilariously uncoordinated game of soccer. Many more injuries were handed out during this game – thankfully, not for me since I’d already acquired enough.
When we’d had enough of soccer and basketball we made our way to the hot tubs on the main pool deck. It was such a relaxing way to spend an afternoon sitting in the hot tub sipping iced water. We chilled in the tub for a while, chatting in mostly Spanish (sometimes with a little bit of English thrown in for my benefit), killing time before we had to grab some dinner and get ready for the nights activities.
We had dinner at an Italian restaurant with M&D’s Canadian friends, Nola and Dennis, and our Floridian friends, Troy and Jarrett. They weren’t technically sitting with us, but every time the waiter looked the other way, we’d inched their table closer and closer. Naturally, when you’re at an Italian restaurant you have delicious Italian food. Naturally, I had steak, with pasta on the side of course…
M&D went to the show in the Stardust Theatre while Troy, Jarrett and I went to Karaoke in the Pearly Kings Pub, with a quick stop to our room to pack the rest of my bag and show the boys our photo albums. The Karaoke Party was pretty dead and sad. The poor guy running it only had about 4 oldies who were willing to sing with the microphone. Troy and Jarrett eventually left because they couldn’t find a song they were willing to sing and my Argentinean friends were beginning to arrive. I tried to convince brothers Agustin and Sebita to sing with no avail since they didn’t have the song Sebita wanted.
We eventually found the rest of the crowd, who sang in a big group before we left for the SL Toga Party to end the cruise with a bang. It wasn’t as busy as the white party was, but it was still fun with my Argentinean friends, the Boston crew, some NY stranglers and not to mention some hip hop and happening oldies that were getting their groove on! Since Matias was in bed early tonight, only Agustin and I did shots in between regular drinks and dancing. Since it wasn’t too packed tonight, they closed the ‘club’ around 2.30am and we all headed out to walk around the ship. We ended up in the library playing checkers for an hour or so and I’m happy to say that I beat Agustin, despite his cheating with Matias’ help. It was times like those that it’s inconvenient to not understand much of Spanish.
We got sick of playing checkers so we made our way to the front of the ship, sat in the place with the least wind (it was freezing!) and chatted. I managed to fall down some stairs near the hot tub and stack it on my other elbow so I now have two bruises, one on each elbow! We stayed up all night, and watched the lights of Miami get closer as we approached dry land. The sunrise was amazing over the port of Miami. Tonight/ early morning was definitely the best of the entire trip so far.
I went back to my room around 7.45am to have a shower, pack up the rest of my bag and head to breakfast with the parents.
Day 59: Cruise – Naples, Marco Island
After breakfast with the parents at Garden Cafe, we went back to our room, did a last minute emu hunt (check for anything under beds, etc) and took our stuff up to the exit to the terminal. While we waited for our bag tag colour to be called I went for a walk to find my Argentinean friends to say goodbye. Sadly, I only found a few and missed the chance to farewell the others.
Picking up our bags from the cruise terminal was insane! It was basically a massive room, kinda like a school gym, with suitcases in straight lines, coloured tags and hundreds of people looking for their luggage. We finally found ours and made our way to the passport check. I saw some of my friends in the back of the line, but since we had so much luggage I couldn’t leave it with M&D to watch while I said goodbye – -cut as!
We grabbed a large taxi when we got outside and drove to the RV place in Miami.
Once Dad had signed all the papers, watched the safety video and loaded all our stuff into secure areas in the RV and we were off. Since I hadn’t gone to bed the night before, I was wrecked! I slept on and off for most of the day while M&D drove and did some food shopping, etc. I woke up when we stopped off the highway in the Everglades to do an Airboat ride, like the Airboat in Water boy. It wasn’t as fast as I thought it would be, but it was still mad. The alligators aren’t as big as crocodiles in Australia, but they are still pretty deadly. I was glad to be in the boat, and not in the water. They feed them marshmallows as a treat when the boats go through each alligator’s territory – interesting that they enjoy them.
On the road again and we ended up at an RV park in Naples. It was a quiet night in the RV. We had chicken, rice and vegies for dinner, cooked in our mini kitchen.
While I waited for Dad to finished setting up the internet, etc, I napped on my bed. Once again, it turns out that if you’re napping on the bed and haven’t arranged for someone to wake you up; you’re more than likely to stay asleep until the morning. I have to stop doing this since it’s quite uncomfortable to sleep in your clothes, on top of the sleeping bag and upside down on the bed.
Day 60: Naples – St Petersburg
I’m surprised that I haven’t started peeling from my sunburn in the Caribbean. Saying that, I have a tiny bit on my hand that is peeling but overall, it looks like it will make me a darker white rather than peel off. Since I was continually wearing my sea bands to avoid seasickness I also have hilarious tan lines on my wrists. I will have to take a picture and show you guys. It reminds me of when I was in grade 9 and going through my punk stage: I wore a few interesting pieces of punk jewellery.
Anyway, we drove from Naples to St Petersburg today, with a detour to the old folk’s home called Shellpoint, to see some more of Dad’s friends from Connecticut. As my computer had died from lack of power today, we couldn’t research any RV parks so we winged it. The first two were a little on the dodgey side so we continued to Madeira Beach, St Petersburg. M&D went for a swim while I finished writing my numerous blogs. Thankfully, this is the last one for tonight!
Adventures of the Caribbean
Heading onto our 10 day cruise today- very exciting! With the internet prices being ridiculously high, I don’t think we’ll be online much… However, I will try to keep writing my blogs each day and just do a massive post of them all whenever I’m online, so keep checking every few days to hear about our adventures of the Caribbean.
Soaking up the Vitamin D
Today started with a sleep in, breakfast in bed and shopping – what more could you want?
We went to a high-end shopping mall, realised we didn’t fit in with the $1600 flip flops and headed to another mall where we felt a little more comfortable. We bought a massive suitcase, which will fit the two nutcrackers plus much more of our luggage – yay! We grabbed some meat pastries in the hope that they would be similar to a meat pie in Australia – I was terribly disappointed.
It was getting late in the day so we headed back to the hotel so Mum and I could go sunbaking. It was great to soak up some Vitamin D, despite the cold breeze. M&D went for a walk along the beach while I slept in the sun by the pool. Lovely and relaxing.
When M&D got back from the hotel I was back in the room, reading my book on the bed. Dad and I went shopping for Camera equipment and came back with an underwater housing for a point and shoot camera and a fish-eye lens to go with it, as well as a GoPro2 for my 21st birthday!! So glad I go out of bed and went shopping with Dad! We did a fair bit of walking to find a genuine Canon battery for my SLR camera but it was worth it in the end. My dodge fake Canon battery wasn’t charging past 36%.
Eventually we completed all our shopping and rushed back to the hotel for dinner. Of course, whenever possible, steak is the preferred option. It was pretty nice, despite the pre-frozen nature of the vegetables.
We hop on our 10 day Caribbean cruise tomorrow and we’re not sure how much internet access we’ll have, but feel free to keep checking the blog just in case.

Who gives a toot?!
The Resort on Cocoa Beach was one of the best hotels we’ve stayed at. As listed in the previous blog, it had many awesome features, the top being a separate bedroom for me! I was a little sad to find out that the shower wasn’t up to scratch with the rest of the room. It was kinda like being sprayed by a garden hose. Very disappointing.
We packed up our gear into the car and high tailed it down I-95 to Miami Beach. Upon arrival in the area we decided to have a quick looksee at the cruise terminal that we have leave from on Sunday. Turns out that this wasn’t the smartest move because the Ringling Bros. Circus had just finished a show and there were thousands of audience members piling into cars and buses everywhere and clogging up the roads.
After managing to escape the insane traffic surrounding the Performance Centre, we began the hunt for accommodation. Turn out that when you’re right on Miami Beach, the prices get quite extreme. One place wanted over $2700 PER NIGHT for a room with 2 beds in the room, facing the water – pass! The average price was around $500 per night right in the middle of the main beach. We ended up at the Best Western Atlantic Beach Resort which is on the South end of Miami Beach but it’s still right on the beach, so who cares!?
Prior to exploring the boardwalk and the surrounding beach area, we lugged all our luggage (without a bell hop or even a luggage holder – thanks for the help Best Western Staff!) up to our room and settled in. While Dad did some scans and updates on my laptop, Mum and I went for a walk.
Since we have 2 rather large Nutcrackers to transport with us for the next month, we needed to buy a rather large suitcase to accommodate them. Naturally, we went to WalMart, as hundreds of other shoppers decided as well. We didn’t end up getting a suitcase because there wasn’t one big enough to fit the nutcrackers, but we grabbed some other essentials for the upcoming cruise: sunscreen, tanning lotion and razors, etc.
The traffic in Miami is so mental. In just the few short hours that we’ve been here we’ve seen 6 accidents blocking traffic on highways and local roads, 3 breakdowns in the middle of traffic as well as countless dangerous manoeuvres with no indicating. We even saw one guy who had driven up behind a moving truck, smashed into it and managed to wedge his car underneath the back of the truck!
It’s interesting to note that there is a high population of Jewish people in this area. Almost every second person on the street is Jewish. It was especially noticeable since today was the Sabbath and they were all wearing their traditional outfits. It seems to be a close competition between the Jewish population and the Spanish in Miami Beach. There seems to be quite a heavy mix of both in Miami.
Dinner was a simple affair of steak sandwiches and fries/ salad/ fruit in the hotel restaurant at 8.40pm. Looking forward to a lazy day of sleep-ins, sunbaking and cocktails…. Oh no wait, still 3 days till I can legally drink in America!

What a jam-packed day! After starting our busy day with a mediocre breakfast at the Comfort Suites in Daytona, we made our way to the first stop for today: the Daytona Speedway. I was surprised by how much I actually enjoyed walking around the fan area, checking out the cars and doing a tour behind the garages. I wish I had a telephoto lens for days like these.
The intense car noise only added to the atmosphere of exuberance of the crowd that was already beginning to gather earlier in the day.
Once we’d finished our tour behind the garages, bought a few hats and shirts we continued on with our busy day. Our next stop was the Ponce Inlet Lighthouse, which is apparently one of the few lighthouses that you can actually climb up the middle of. It was quite a hike up the 203 steps, but the view and the breeze from the top was almost worth it – definitely should’ve worn shorts not jeans today. The actual lighthouse is still in use so we couldn’t go to the very top in case we were crazy enough to damage it. There were also a few mini museums surrounding the lighthouse that we were available for investigation.
We were rushed from this tourist site by Dad because we were running late on our self-appointed schedule for today and we needed to be at the Kennedy Space Centre before the last tour began. We got there with plenty of time to spare, got on the tour bus and headed to the Visitors Centre and the launch site of Saturn 5. It was very eye-opening to see the size of the Saturn 5 because when you see it on TV or in a photo, it looks so small in comparison to everything around it, but in reality it’s immense! We hopped back on the tour bus, took some snaps of the Rocket Garden, grabbed our car and set off for our hotel.
Our hotel is amazing!
We have a 2 bedroom apartment with 2 bathrooms, a living room, kitchen, 3 TVs and a washing/drying machine. The Resort on Cocoa Beach also has an in-house theatre, massive pool, spa, sauna, Mexican Restaurant downstairs and lots more! I wish we could’ve stayed here a few more nights, but yeah, need to get down to Miami.
We all did a massive repack of our bags tonight, with the help of our vacuum sealed bags to help minimise our snow/winter gear. I’m getting pumped to be in Miami, on our cruise and be 21!! Bring it on America!

Living life on the edge
Since we’re all pretty lazy we haven’t been setting alarms to get up heaps early, we have the situation of waking up with only 30-45 minutes to eat breakfast at the hotel and we rush to have showers and get ready so we can eat before they close the breakfast area. This morning I had blueberry waffles! A-MAZ-ING! I am soo buying a waffle machine when we get home and making blueberry waffles!
After breakfast was over and our bags were packed we started our drive to Savannah, GA via Charleston, SC . As usual, I slept for most of the car trip – I don’t know why I get so tired in the car, but it sure makes the day go faster. Charleston is known for its massive mansions and plantations. As we came into town we stopped at the Middleton Plantation to stretch our legs and have a look around. All the trees had a slightly ‘haunted’ look about them because they were covered in the moss called ‘grandpa’s beard’. Very strange looking flora yet interesting to touch.
We continued into the town of Charleston we noticed that the town was covered in old historic houses and mansions. Charleston was another town who played an important part in the Civil War between the North and the South. We participated in a tour through the Middletown House on the waterfront (which was the family home linked to the plantation we visited earlier) and had a look at what the houses were like back in the day. Apparently the owner still lives upstairs in the house.
At this point in the day it was around 1.30 pm and we were starving! So naturally, we went on a hunt for some grub. We found a cute little cafe and all ordered different variations of steak – LOL. DELICIOUS!
Makes me drools just remembering the steak…. Anyway, let’s not be distracted!
Back on the road after lunch, we drove in circles around the town, checking out the local historical landmarks, etc. We eventually headed out of town and continued south towards Savannah.
Arriving at our hotel in Savannah around 5pm, we still had enough light to see some of the town as we drove through. An interesting thing to mention is that we seem to be right on the edge of the ghetto! So much for our relaxing exploration of the area that was supposed to happen. We’re told it’s not too safe to be walking around out area after dark so we chilled in the room for a few hours after arrival to plan the next few days, etc.
Subsequent to booking our accommodation for the next few nights we headed out to dinner at Mellow Mushrooms (the local uni pizza hang out) and met up with an Aussie who’s studying in America. It was a nice night to sit and chat about old times. There was some mad artwork in the shop, very typical for a uni hot spot, but terribly disgusting bathrooms!
Finally back at the hotel and on my laptop – M&D had it for the afternoon and even part of when we got home from dinner. Sitting typing my blog after finishing my photos, trying to block out my parents snoring – again! How I miss my own bedroom.

Public pickle fight: publically acceptable or preposterous?
There’s nothing like waking up to an overcast day when you’re expecting sun. With 5 hours of driving on the plan for today, we grabbed breakfast on the run and made a quick detour to the Wright Brothers Memorial Site (in the rain) as we headed south. We stopped for lunch at a tiny country town called Plymouth. We were served by a young girl who engaged us in conversation about our trip, where we were from and whether or not I was homeschooled. Seriously: how young do I look!?!
When we got our meals we realised that there was no spear pickles on the side of the plate, like the menu had promised! Naturally, Mum corrected the mistake and we got our spear pickles – they were delicious!
Mum started a pickle duel and we laughed about it until we realised people were watching us. Apparently it’s not socially acceptable to have a pickle fight in public!
We hunted for a dentist that sells toothbrushes specifically for braces, only to find out that in America they don’t have toothbrushes that are specifically designed for braces: would’ve been nice to know earlier!
As we went further and further south through the Bible Belt, we noticed a lot more churches, houses in disrepair and numerous trailer parks.
At the Florence Comfort Suites tonight and it’s an amazing room! Instead of just the regular 2 bed room, it also has a partially separated lounge area. Niiicceeee!
Kathryn’s angry vent for today: I can’t believe it! All throughout our trip after we leave a city it gets snow. First in Quebec and Montreal and now in Annapolis. How do we keep missing it? Does it just naturally avoid Aussies?
Half way there
An early morning today as we had to pack all our stuff into the car before we left for Kim’s church at 9am. After the service we said our goodbyes and started our long drive to Kitty Hawk in North Carolina. To get to this stage we had to pass from Maryland through Virginia and into North Carolina. It was funny to listen to the radio as we passed through the borders of different states heading south and hear how the music changed according to the area that we were in. Here’s a sample of what we were listening to through Virginia State and into North Carolina:
We arrived at the Hilton at Kitty Hawk Outer Banks around 4.30pm, dumped our stuff in the room and went for a walk along the beach. The wind was lovely and refreshing after so long in the car. We had some dinner in the hotel restaurant bar downstairs (yum!) and then called a few family members on Skype. We left Dad editing photos while Mum and I went down for a relaxing spa.
Today is officially the halfway point in our trip. We’ve done well survive this far with everyone still intact and most of our belongings still in our suitcases, not in random forgotten hotels. Gold star for us!

Annapolis: town of good looking Navy cadets. Possible relocation from Australia?
What a great sleep in I had this morning! That’s right folks, you heard me right, SLEEP IN!
I didn’t get out of bed till 11am – it was great! When I eventually dragged myself out of bed I grabbed some peanut butter toast, a banana and English breakfast tea and had a leisurely breakfast at the dining room table. Dad was in a rush to get going, so I got ready, waited for them to have some lunch and we were off on our adventure.
Kim took us to a shopping mall to run some errands, etc and then we headed into Annapolis town to have a look around and meet up with Dad’s friend Heidi.
We grabbed some coffee and continued our stroll through the town and around the harbour. It was quite a cute little township which had a lot of good looking Navy personal (maybe I should move here!) since there is a Naval academy right in town. Mum of course managed to find a Christmas shop that not only had many Nutcracker dolls but was also having a store wide 50% off sale. Needless to say, she bought many nutcrackers dolls, including two thigh high ones. We might have to FedEx them home.
We had dinner plans with Kim’s friend, Eric, so altered our course and set off to a harbour restaurant. There was an amazing sunset that streaked the sky and the boat harbour with pinks and oranges as we crossed the bridge. When we (finally) arrived at the restaurant I barely had to look at a menu to decide on the obvious choice: steak! It was delicious!
The ‘older’ generation sat around the ridiculously small table, drank wine, ate mud cake and chatted about the good old days while I nodded off to sleep, using my ski jacket as a pillow.
We leave for Kitty Hawk tomorrow so we did a rearrange and pack up of our gear when we got home from town in preparation for Tetris mania in the car tomorrow morning. Definitely looking forward to warmer weather as we continue further south.

Making new friends, visiting old friends
We’ve all seen the typical American movies of a teenager being rudely awakened by their parents in unconventional ways. Sometimes they flip the mattress over, steal the blankets or even resort to throwing water on the sleeping teen. These are not necessary to awaken a teen, but merely entertaining for the person who is doing the waking. Dad decided that to wake me up this morning it was necessary to turn on the overhead light. For all those who have been in my position before, you will understand how much the ceiling light blinds you as you are waking up. Gee thanks Dad.
There are few things that are worth getting out of bed at such an ungodly hour of the morning for. Today’s activities didn’t make the list, although I did see a nice sunrise this morning from Kim’s balcony.
We headed back into Washington City to do a 2 hour hop-on hop-off bus of the same sites we saw yesterday but with information and a comfy seat to go with it. At one particular stop we hopped off and went hunting through tourist shops for cool souvenirs. The shops were similar to each other but we found at least one cool product.
After our tour ended, we grabbed our car from Union Station, did a drive by of the Pentagon- took some sneaky photos since you’re not allowed to take photos of it and headed to Mount Vernon. This is the site for George Washington’s family home. We got some tickets and an audio tour and set out to explore the expansive grounds. It was a lovely area with old school buildings, picturesque flora, cuddly sheep and of course, the Christmas Camel.
We did a tour of the mansion although there are no photos to prove this since we weren’t allowed to take any photos inside the mansion – strange. The tour guides were a bit droll and boring, but M&D seemed to enjoy the commentary so that’s good. Mum and the Christmas Camel are now best friends after the camel gave Mum’s hand a good slobbering.
We all wore our thick jackets and thermals today because we were expecting cold windy weather. Once again, we were dressed incorrectly for the local weather. I wish it would just be consistently cold or warm, just pick one damn it!
After what seemed like forever, we got back in the car and headed to Dad’s NZ friend, Gary’s house. He’s an incredible artist who is frequently commissioned to produce artworks for the Pentagon and other government facilities. He even gave us a few prints to take home with us – woot!
On our way home, the GPS (as expected) was being super annoying and we ended up switching constantly between crowded highways and peak hour traffic through the city.
Very painful, but eventually got home.
I think we’re checking out Annapolis with Kim tomorrow and having dinner at a restaurant in town. The best thing about tomorrow is that we don’t leave to go tiki touring till after lunch. Do I hear the words ‘sleep in’?

A day of memorials
What a massive day! We headed into Washington City today to check out all the monuments and unique buildings.
We started our walking tour from Union Station after driving in circles for 10 minutes looking for public parking, rather than reserved parking for Senate members. I think that Grand Central in NY is much more exciting and aesthetically pleasing then Union Station – sorry Washington.
From here we walked to the Washington Capitol Building and wanted to have a look at the inside but were told at the security check point that we couldn’t take our bags, our water or our food. Was a bit ridiculous but I stayed with our stuff whilst M&D went inside to find out that we couldn’t do our own tour, etc and it would take 45 minutes! Stuff that, we left and continued our walking tour around the Washington Mall.
As we strolled through the mall with Smithsonian Buildings on either side, we came upon our next stop: the Washington Memorial site. After snapping a few photos of the site we continued on to the White House. Mum was feeling tired so we left her relaxing at the back of the White House viewing area while Dad and I explored the area around the front of the White House. There is a permanent media set up right beside the White House – insane! On our way back to Mum we actually saw Obama playing with his dog in the yard; trippy as! She was pretty cut that she hadn’t come with us when we told her!
Once we collected Mum from her spot we ventured out to the Lincoln Memorial Site (the one featured in Night in the Museum 2). As seems to be the pattern with this time of year, there has been lots of construction and rejuvenation in many of the towns throughout our trip. Washington is no exception. The Reflection Pool at the Lincoln Memorial Site was all dug up and had work crews surrounding it. Super cut!
Following our exploration of the memorial we ambled down and viewed the breath taking Jefferson Memorial across the water as you stood in the Martin Luther King Memorial site. Quite a picturesque area.
Since the afternoon was getting on, we made our way back to the Washington Memorial so I could take a nice sunset picture. Mum couldn’t be bothered and headed to check out the Museum of Natural American History (or something). Dad and I chilled on the grass around the memorial, waiting for the right moment. Got some lovely photos, will post some of them maybe.
After I had a few hundred pictures of the lovely sunset, we searched out Mum at the museum, grabbed a cab to Union Station, got our car and headed home.
What a long day of walking. My legs and back are sooo sore! Another full day tomorrow – my poor legs!
PS: I’m wrecked, sorry if there are mistakes in the blog.. also, will have to put names on the photos later!

Have your say…

This is just a quick poll to find out just how crazy you all think we are

Love is a battlefield
After a night in the Holiday Inn, we grabbed some breakfast from the buffet downstairs and started our way to Annapolis via Gettysburg. For those who don’t know about Gettysburg, it was the site of a massive civil war between the Confederates and the Union. To find out more, check out this site http://americancivilwar.com/getty.html.
Instead of walking around the 24 miles of battlefield in Gettysburg, we did the driving audio tour that you played in your car of the same area. Not as cold and it didn’t kill your legs walking – a much better option.
When we were buying the CD tour we also had a look around the tourist information centre for the battle, etc. It was a massive building, which was highlighted further by the emptiness of it and the lack of tourists. We were going to check out the 30 minute movie as well but the driving tour was already going to take 2 hours and we still had to get to Annapolis by tonight so we skipped it.
The whole town of Gettysburg is set up to educate tourists, and perhaps some ignorant locals, on the 3 day battle. It seems to be their main tourist attraction in the area. All the tourist shops have figurines, memorabilia and information on the battle and there are still heaps of old school canons and stuff around the empty fields and most people you find will know at least something of the battle, if not the whole story.
As we were leaving the town of Gettysburg we found a cute little German Christmas shop with original German Nutcracker Men- the sort Mum has been searching constantly for. The only problem with these ones was that they were outrageously expensive. They were around $150 for one as big as my forearm so Mum didn’t buy one. The man who was attentive two seconds ago suddenly couldn’t get rid of us fast enough – gee thanks!
From Gettysburg to Annapolis it was a bit of a hike so I had an on and off nap in the back of the car. We grabbed some groceries before heading to another of Dad’s friends, Kim, to have dinner and stay a few days. We’re located close enough to Washington to drive in and do some touristy things tomorrow and Mount Vernon the day after probably.
I have my own room here – THANK GOD! Finally I won’t have to put up with snoring and I have my own space! Sooo very happy to be here.
On the road again
After another lovely sleep in, we packed our gear into our rental car and started our 12 day trip down to Miami. On our way down to Philly we stopped for gas and saw this guy that had his cat in the car- made me miss Chilli
. We ended up in Philadelphia for tonight after visiting some national history in the town. We saw the Liberty Bell and the Declaration of Independence building along with their gift shop and a delicious Mexican place for lunch. We were very glad to have our ski jackets today but we were still freezing! It seems that we’ve acclimatised to the warmer weather of Chicago and need to be better prepared for colder weather instead of expecting warmer weather as we go further south.
Just finished planning and booking our activities for our cruise on the 15th of January, very exciting! Heading to Gettysburg (just outside of Washington) tomorrow to see another of Dad’s friends and explore Washington for a few days.
NOTE: photos up now

Just a little chilly!
True to my new year’s resolution, I slept in till 9am this morning. A great start to the New Year I think
. Grabbed some breakie before heading off to Grand Central Station. What an amazing building; it’s hard to believe that it’s actually a train station. Brisbane has got to get an upgrade! It was great to have a look around and remember back to all the movies that have used it in their scenes.
After exploring the station, we hopped back on the subway and zoomed towards Wall Street. It wasn’t what I was expecting… I thought it was going to be packed and busy, but in hindsight, it is winter, the second day of the New Year and not to mention how the GFC affected the area. It was still a lovely area to stroll through on the way to the Statue of Liberty ferry dock. When we got there, we found out that the entire inside of the statue was closed and we couldn’t access it, so we did a boat trip around the harbour and the Island because it was a 2 hour shorter line than the one that landed on the island. Quite a relaxing trip.
Stepping back into the freezing wind off the boat we headed to the WTC site. Was a freezing walk with all of us being underdressed and not prepared for the chilly gales of wind, but there was beautiful architecture along the way. We couldn’t get in to see the memorial at ground zero because of the incredibly long line, but we did check out St Pauls Church. This church closed down to their regular activities for 9 months to help out with the volunteers and workers during the aftermath of the 9/11 tragedy. Walking through the church with all the memorabilia was overwhelmingly moving. It was hard for me to comprehend all that went on as I was so removed from it all in Australia, but looking through the church really opened my eyes to how it was for Americans.
Gratefully, we headed into the warm subway after that to make our way to the NYU book store. We got there, found a lovely NYU letterman jacket but distressingly it was a XXL!
Had a look around the rest of the store and bought a NYU shirt.
Grabbed some dinner at the Red Lobster on the way back to the hotel and it was delicious! Steak and mashed potato! Still really full though…
We start our long journey down to Miami tomorrow; hopefully there aren’t as many mountain ranges on this side of the country.

December to remember
We started the New Year off with a sleep in till 10am which was necessary since we had such a late night yesterday. After our late start we had some breakie and headed out into the city. The highlight of my day was Central Park. What an amazing area! Although we only explored ¼ of the park, it was still beautiful. It would’ve been great to go ice skating but there was a massive line and we already had a late start to our day.
We spent the rest of the day riding the subway, exploring the Rockefeller Center, checking out the Christmas tree featured in Home Alone and trekked all the way out to NYU (New York University) after going to 8th Avenue instead of 8th STREET, only to find out that they were closed today! Sooo cut!
Came back to the hotel and finally relaxed! Been updating my blogs and photos for the last few hours and I’m glad that it’s nearly done.
I’m definitely looking forward to an early night tonight.
As I look back on the last month of travelling through USA and Canada, I realise that it has been one of the greatest Decembers in my life. Looking forward to the next 366 days of sleep ins, ice cream and awesome photos. Bring it on!

New York: nobody drops the ball like we do!
Copyright to Tim Schneider for his great blog title above.
The last day of 2011 began with a sleep in and breakfast in bed! Now if I’d had a massage as well, it would have been a perfect morning. We hit up the Empire State building first today. As with any popular tourist destination there were massive lines outside and inside the building. We supposedly got ‘express tickets’ from a ticket man outside, which we found out later were not express at all! Very annoyed! We had to sit through a virtual simulation ride in order to get a combo ticket up to the observation deck. Felt pretty sick after the ride, almost like the Batman Ride in Movie World, Gold Coast.
The view from the top was amazing, despite the hundreds of tourists and locals crowding the observation deck. Luckily, it only started raining as we were leaving, so it didn’t ruin too many photos.
We arrived back at the hotel around 1.30/ 2pm, packed up our gear in our ski jackets (since word on the street was that we couldn’t have backpacks or anything), had a little bit of a rest and then headed out to Times Square. On our way to searching out a place where we could see the ball drop, we grabbed some pizza as a quick dinner, found our way to Broadway and West 48th street and settled in for a 9 hour wait.
We made friends with the randoms surrounding us and had many in-depth conversations about nothing. When standing hurt our legs/ feet too much we would sit down on the pavement, like many bogans around us, and rest our poor legs.
Times Square has its advantages and disadvantages. Advantage 1: you get to be in the middle of the craziness for New Years Eve, a once in a life time opportunity. Advantage 2: random guys buy me ice cream – boo yah! Disadvantage 1: feral locals decide that when they can’t hold on any longer, they will just urinate on the street right near you! Disadvantage 2: the NYE committee didn’t put on enough entertainment during the afternoon and it was pretty boring just standing there.
Thankfully, midnight came eventually, we all cheered and then we fought through the crowds to get back to our hotel. We got back to our hotel, took off our jackets, uploaded some pictures, had a quick chat with some family and then collapsed into bed. Sweet relief for our aching legs.
